Howl at the moon

Peoples_park1

By Patrick Naughton

Walking through the People's Park reminded me of the American Wearwolf in London. My footsteps echoed, an imaginary shadow of sound breaking the stillness of the day. The claws of the distant trees emerged and disappeared through the haze. Time stood still, the familar was unfamiliar, all that was missing was a howl at the moon.

It is very important to choose carefully which part of your painting to work on first.  Especially if you are a parent.

Snow White Shoes

Snow_white_shoes

She never wore those shoes, never even tried them on, her foot never even touched the purple satin lining. She just wanted to have and behold them, to occasionally take them out of her wardrobe and admire them.

But that wasn’t enough anymore she took her fantasy to the next level and a painting was commissioned. She wanted to keep those shoes in suspended animation, like her secret lover captured in the love bubble of her imagination.

But the choices of an eccentric lady didn’t sway my vision. When the painting was complete the shoes moved into another dimension. Yet again another story had begun.

Creation myths : The world egg

Egg_forms

A Creation Myth is a supernatural mytho-religous story that describes the beginnings of life and the universe. It is invariably but not always a deliberate act of creation by a supreme entity.

Many accounts of creation share broadly similar themes. These often begin with a magical emptiness, wherein there occurs the fractionation of the elements of the world from a primordial chaos; the separation of the mother and father gods or the splitting of a Cosmic egg and the emergence of land and creatures from an infinite and timeless ocean.

My interest lies in the commonality of many of these myths, although these beliefs and stories may not be a literal account of actual events, they can be seen to express ideas that are perceived by people and cultures to be truths at a deeper or more symbolic level.

With this new body of work I am to focus on the notion of the cosmic or world egg, the container of life, in a sense a metaphysical microcosm of our planet. The earth itself resembles an egg with a crust (shell), magma (egg white) and core (yolk).

The splitting of this egg symbolises the creation, from it emerges either a primordial being or creator, or the elements to make the universe, the notion of the egg, floating in the primordial waters containing the world also alludes to the great flood or deluge and the ‘Ark.’

This work is about symbolism and meaning on a subtle level. The objects are intended to touch apon something just under the surface of or awareness.

My intention is to represent this ‘event’ and to use the ‘shell’ surface as a vehicle for generating imagery associated with these myths.

Yeah i know its Easter-purely coincidence though !

West Cork Day Dream

West_cork_dream

7:12 a.m: The West Cork sun creeps through the blinds. I decide to get some exercise. I decide to get up immediately. I decide just not now.

12:16 a.m: Drag myself out of bed and have a coffee.

12:55 a.m: His deep voice from kitchen floats into the lounge ‘Your omelet is ready’.

12:56 a.m: ‘A mimosa would be good about now’ I mumble into his ear

12:57 a.m: Mmmmm. It is.

1:23 p.m: ‘that’s it I can’t eat another bite.’ I softly sigh

1:26 p.m: I stare out the window at beautiful, calm, peaceful West Cork, aimlessly, dreaming, floating away on the waves.

2:11 p.m: In middle of my West Cork day dream, he who cooked my breakfast begins touching my foot with his. He never leaves me day dream in peace!

5:45 p.m: I wake up (again). We are both upstairs. He is sound asleep, wearing apparently only one sock.

I turn to look out the window and resume my west cork day dream.

Crow_makes_a_wish

Crow makes a wish and brings it to the sea.
It is a wish for companionship or for knowledge, he can't quite decide.
But it is a definite wish for something
and so he takes a piece of sky, he takes a piece of  the skies love for the sea,
and he drops it into the waves.
The sea swallows it in a rustle of sand and his wish is gone.
He waits by the shore hoping in his heart for a friend
and in his mind for the answers to the questions he asks himself constantly.

Bead Pods

.... or something. I am at a loss as to what to call these!

Acornbeads_2

By Lynn Durie

I very rudely made these whilst we had guests over but I had the idea and I just couldn't wait. (They were good friends and are used to us/me!) These beads are really amazing. I have used them before and am facinated by the way light affects them. Depending on what way the light hits them, they can look like regular glassy beads and then suddenly you move them and they light up like they have their very own little bulb inside them!

Acornbeadslightcroped

Which is beautiful but makes for an extra obstacle when photographing, which I definately do not need!
Mind you, http://www.picnik.com is brilliant. I think Paul may have led me to that site. Anyone who is struggling should have a go and experiment with it. Very user friendly and fun too.

Necklaceletters

This is not very easy to see in this badly taken photo but the lettering says 'necklace' in a very abstract form! (A double-click on the image is required). Photo complete with a mini-green-pint to celebrate St Patrick's Day albeit in a mini-way!

NORMA JEAN IS ALIVE & WELL AND LIVING IN MY HOUSE

Painting by Ellen McDermott

Whenever I'm doing a painting I learn a little during my research on the subject I'm working on like these facts about Marilyn;  She is the only female on the Forbes rich list of dead celebrities and that my husband would like me to look like this when we go out to the local on Friday night.

Emergence

Emergence
by Cristina Colli  cm 30x30 - Slate, smalti, gold leaf smalti

Creativity lightly knocks on my door. Sometimes the gentle sound is lost, covered by the noise of the outside world. Other times – the good ones – I hear it and I know that all I have to do is sit quietly and listen, letting images bubble up to the surface and allowing them to become a new piece.

When I started working on Emergence, I had an image of a powerful force bursting from within, struggling to escape from the prison of a thick, layered armour. A metaphor of the effort to break the outer shell and be true to our Self.

I used thinset to raise the smalti a bit above the slate, thus giving the impression of something forceful rising from the cracks, pushing through the slate. I also laid smalti at odd angles, to increase reflectivity and give the feeling of something out of control.

Slate, a metamorphic rock that splits into thin, smooth-surfaced layers, was an obvious choice to represent the layers of the shell.

River Sanctuary

River_sanctuary_1000
By Ed P

River Sanctuary is a somewhere you can go to find peace, enlightenment and wisdom. It is in a forgotten place, where people no longer go. It is too far away and most people won’t bother looking for it. This remoteness is part of its appeal. You know you won’t be disturbed as you spend some quiet time with your self, reflecting on the things which are important to you. There are challenges in reaching this place but you know it will be worth the effort when you get there.

On arrival at the river sanctuary you can sit by the banks and enjoy the peaceful sounds of the water as you soak in the sunshine. You can drink from the sanctuary falls. It is cool, fresh and pure. Somehow it clears your mind and sharpens your vision.

As you ramble over the bridge you notice some steps leading up the hill. Further up there’s some kind of bridge. Where does it lead?

Blog Background
While creating River Sanctuary I put images of it as it progressed on my blog. Emma Barone left a few comments, here’s how our conversation went.

Emma:
“Hi Ed P, I really like this image, River Sanctuary. I want to go there stand at the bridge & hear the water, smell the fresh air, see the beautiful greenery & the trippy blue sky. There is probably a secret cave above the waterfall. It’s magical. “
Ed P:
“Hi Emma, You're right about the secret cave. Have a look at the larger version, click the image and new window will open. There's someone in the cave waiting for you but you have to convince him you are the person he is expecting so that he'll let down the bridge for you.
“Thanks for dropping by. Keep an eye on the blog so you will know when the picture is finished. You'll be able to explore it fully then.”

Emma:
“Hi Ed P, how cool is that, when I took a closer look I seen the draw bridge & the bridge keeper. I wonder will he let me into the magic cave, I am curious & I want to see inside.”
Ed P:
"Hi Emma, Be careful as you climb the hill. If you are wearing high heels you might end up with your heels to heaven..."

There are few more detail pictures in my Spiritual Art Gallery.
